3 Big Numbers
10th January 2017
Cambridge is very good at broadcasting the dominance of the Cambridge Cluster.
The community of people who make up the cluster have come together to collaborate on a number of initiatives. One great example is the highly impressive Cambridge Cluster Map, showing overall and company specific data for all the companies in the cluster: www.camclustermap.com .
Another example is the use of three, large, memorable, numbers to convey the scale and success of the Cambridge Cluster.
4,300 – knowledge intensive firms
58,000 – people employed by knowledge intensive firms
£11bn - total turnover of knowledge intensive firms.
These three numbers are used consistently, frequently, and by all those with an interest in the cluster. The result is that word spreads and the numbers and pre-eminence of Cambridge as the UK’s top tech cluster is absorbed by government in the UK and across Europe.
The key is all those involved coming together and collaborating on important issues; including simple memorable numbers that appeal to journalists and politicians. Cambridge is the best example of a cluster in the UK; an effective high-technology, science based cluster in the UK. Others are following but are not there yet.
What are your three big numbers? Attach a couple of stories to each of the numbers about appealing, accessible, relevant technologies that you are working on, or have transferred across to companies for them to develop, and you have got your Technology Transfer Office marketing material pretty much done.
